Hong Kong > Sights > Markets & Street Markets
Hong Kong offers several (outdoor) markets, advertized as great tourist attractions. Few of them are special and "must-sees." The rest is of the clothes-shoes-watches-souvenirs variety. If you are new to travelling in Asia, you might be fascinated by them. However, once you have been to two or three countries, you will realize that these tourist traps are always exactly the same, offering the same assortment of fakes and cheaply made articles. And you will always be paying through your nose when buying stuff.
This does not mean that you cannot spend an excellent time there. Visit and enjoy yourself. But be watchful (also with regard to the safety of your wallet).
An experienced traveller's market guidelines are:
a) Markets frequented exclusively by tourists -> don't buy.
b) Markets also frequented by locals -> watch how much they pay for an
article and never pay more.
c) Markets with only locals -> reconnoiter, compare prices and dive in!
The markets in the following list are classified as must-see (special or scenic, truly worth a visit), tourist trap (self-explanatory) or local (few tourists, inexpensive).
