Peak Tram going downhill

Peak Tram going downhill

The Peak Tram was established in 1888, is Hong Kong's oldest form of public transport and one of Hong Kong's absolute must-dos. The track is 1.4 kilometers long, climbing 368 meters in altitude and gradients as steep as 27 degrees. By day or by night, you will experience unforgettable sights on Victoria Harbour and the Mid-Levels during the 7-minute journey up or down.

Upon boarding, try to get a window seat on the right side of the tram (when facing uphill). Once the tram starts to creep up or down the hill like a caterpillar, you will feel the track getting steeper and steeper (and the wooden seat getting more and more uncomfortable), and perhaps breathe a sigh of relief when the tram reaches some kind of plateau after the steepest part.

The uphill course starts at Lower Peak Station, Central, which is located on Garden Road below Hong Kong Park. One can either walk there, note that the streets get rather steep, or take the open double-decker bus 15C from the Star Ferry Concourse in Central.

The downhill course starts at Peak Tower. Look for a small entrance on the road-side of the building. There can be quite long queues.

A single journey with the Peak Tram costs HK$ 20, a return ticket HK$ 30 (change is given, Octopus Card applicable).
