Switzerland > Transport > Scenic Railways
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Switzerland did an admirable job of developing its Alpine railway network. Great scenic routes through fascinating, wild regions and over impossibly high viaducts were the result. Nowadays, these routes are still cherished and carefully maintained, although in some instances, faster connections have been built or are currently under construction.
Try to make at least one scenic journey during your stay in Switzerland. With a little weather luck (except for very heavy rainfall/snow and fog as thick as pea soup every weather condition is OK) you will take home wonderful memories.
Since these routes are very popular, seat reservations (well) in advance are recommended. Should you intend to travel 1st class, inquire about a seat in the panorama car. These carriages have glass tops and offer the best view of the scenery.
Tickets and reservations can be purchased at SBB's normal ticket offices.

Please note
Especially with American tourists, the question usually
comes up if these routes were not better done by car. The answer
is a clear no. In the Alps, more and more roads are built below
ground in galleries or tunnels, which do not allow you to stop
anywhere. The trains on the other hand received the best tracks when
they were built long ago, their tracks clinging to inclines and
leading over true masterpieces of railroad engineering.
