Angkor Wat is Angkor's most famous and well-preserved temple and a wonderful example of the classical Khmer architecture.
The majestic, thoroughly impressive structure was ordered built by King Suryavarman II towards the end of the 12th century and is considered the largest sacral building on earth.
Unlike Angkor's other structures, Angkor Wat has remained in more or less constant use as a religious center since the days of the Khmer empire. To modern Cambodians, it is the epitome of their rich cultural past, and a stylized representation of the monument is depicted on the country's flag.
Today, Angkor Wat is Cambodia's main tourist attraction and can feel rather overrun and besieged. It is located about five kilometers north of the town of Siem Reap where all the hotels are located.
Because the area of Angkor is enormous, its is necessary to "bundle" sights. Angkor Wat is situated close to Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm.
