Cambodia > Places & Sights > Killing Fields
On the Killing Fields, the communist Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979) executed their supposed enemies. The total number of victims is unknown even today but estimates run as high as 3.3 million people, which equals more than a third of Cambodia's population at that time.
One major killing field is situated at Choeung Ek, some 10 kilometers outside of Phnom Penh. Its mass graves contained more than 10,000 bodies, mainly unfortunate inmates of Phnom Penh prison who were killed under gruesome circumstances.
Today, the place serves as a memorial. A mausoleum in the form of a stupa contains 8,000 skulls. The better part of the mass graves was exhumed and left open to illustrate the horror.
Sensitive visitors should think twice about visiting the place.
