Boat

Peter M. Geiser (and Sibylle Dussy)

Cambodia borders the Gulf of Thailand and is home to Lake Tonlé Sap, SE Asia's largest fresh water lake, which forms part of an extensive river system including the Mekong. Therefore, boats serve as an important means of transport.

Frequent routes are:

There are fast and modern boats, managed by Malays, as well as slow and often derelict local boats. The time (and price) difference between the various services can be enormous, e.g., fast boats cover the journey from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap within four to six hours, while slow boats take up to four days, depending on the water level and the season.

Slow boats tend to be overcrowded (you may be required to sit on the roof), frequently break down and sometimes even sink. Unlike modern boats, they cannot outspeed pirates and are not necessarily armed.

Should you consider to travel by boat, please also refer to the general information on our transport page.

Local aside
Lake Tonlé Sap offers a fascinating natural phenomenon. During the dry season, it is by comparison small and shallow and Tonlé Sap river flows from it to the south. During the wet season, however, the flooding Mekong's water masses push north, thereby reversing the Tonlé Sap river's flow. The lake swells up to five to six times its previous size and serves as a natural flood basin and a rich breeding ground for fish.
