Busses are Asia's ubiquitous method of transport.
Slow local busses serve all the stops along the way, and more: usually, this kind of bus will also stop for any passenger who signals it down anywhere along its route and per default if you are a tourist (which can be a pretty nuisance after a while).
Most of these slow busses are rather uncomfortable and overcrowded, and introduce a traveller to every single bone in his or her body because after a long drive every single one of them will hurt.
Popular, much-frequented routes such as Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville (Kampong Saom) are served by reasonably comfortable express busses. Some such busses play martial-arts movies on a TV hung from the front ceiling (occasionally with the volume turned up to max) and, should they have air-con, usually try to freeze their passengers.
Road conditions in Cambodia have improved over the past years, but still vary greatly and range from washed-out dirt tracks to tarmacked "highways." During the monsoon season, all of them can be very difficult to pass.
