Qingdao

Peter M. Geiser

Qingdao is most famous for its beer. In 1897, Germany occupied the city on Shandong peninsula and introduced German-style brewing, a tradition that still survives. In recent years, Qingdao's wine has become famous as well, although it is more on the sweet side.

Among the Chinese, Qingdao is a favourite spot for swimming. Beach #1 is 500 meters long and 20 meters wide and covered with fine sand. There is a net some 300 meters out in the sea as protection against sharks.

On warm, sunny days, Quingdao's six beaches, numbered from one to six, are crowded (up to 250,000 for Beach #1 alone!).
