With China's current rapid growth and development, bus fleets are likely to be modernized at an astonishing rate. Yet for some more years, you are likely to ride the occasional 'back breaker' and 'pothole jumper,' especially in rural areas, and thereby experience the traditional, crammed Asian backpacker feeling.

There are two main type of busses: city busses and overland busses. Both run frequently and are affordable. Modern long-distance busses can be extremely comfortable and luxurious.

Since city busses are extremely crowded, you have to be very careful of pickpockets. Take your bags in front of you, so that nobody can cut it open.
