Hong Kong and its Food

Sibylle Dussy

Hong Kong is a wonderful place to sample food from all around the world, and its list of excellent restaurants ranging through all price categories is endless. Plan ahead, else your stay will be over and you will have eaten in only half the places you intended to.

Hong Kong's own cuisine bears testimony to its mongrel past as a melting pot of different cultures, and is best described as "all we like." It is, e.g., not unusual to get a set dinner containing

a) cold buckwheat noodles, eel, sashimi (all traditionally Japanese),
b) squid in spicy red sauce (typical of Hong Kong),
c) corn soup, salad with thousand islands dressing (American), a
d) dessert of mousse and cream (European), as well as a
e) pieces of water melon and cantaloupe (Asian).
