In legend, the relics of the Buddha brought from India some 2,000 years ago were acompanied by thousand military leaders (thus its name, composed from bo, leader and tahtaung, thousand). The hollow inside of the 40-meters-high spire has been turned into a museum displaying many ancient relics.
