Located 21 kilometers south-west of Mandalay on the west bank of the Ayeyarwady River, Sagaing was the capital of the independent Shan kingdom from 1315 to 1364, and later again from 1760 to 1764. Today it is mainly a meditation center.
Near the Sagaing Hill are over 600 monasteries for both monks and nuns.
