It must be said that the region of the ethnic Tibetans consists not only as what is known Tibetan Autonomous Region, but an area covering a little more than two million square kilometers with a population of roughly five million Tibetans (excluding Chinese) as per Chinese government census.

These regions are designated as Tibetan Autonomous Prefectures in four other Chinese provinces. The region as a whole is called Cholkha-sum by the Tibetans.
