Nha Trang

Peter M. Geiser

Nha Trang is Vietnam's main beach town. Not surprisingly, seafood is the local culinary speciality. It is comparatively cheap and everywhere available fresh.

Sights include

  • the Cham towers and the pagoda with the giant sitting Buddha (unfortunately infested with many beggars and completely overrun whenever there is a cruise ship in the harbour),
  • the shipyard about 500 meters upriver from the Cham towers where boats are still built in the traditional way (being allowed to wander around happens by courtesy of the owners; be friendly and do not take this favour for granted),
  • the fishing village south of Nha Trang (many souvenir shops),
  • the oceanographic institute (worth a visit).

Nha Trang offers excellent places for snorkelling and scuba diving. Some 70 islands and rocky shores are easily accessible by boat. Depth is usually less than 20 meters, with little undercurrents. Up to 12 meters there are all kinds of corals, later its sand and rocks. Coral fish shine in beautiful colours. Don't expect large swarms of fish, since overfishing reduced their numbers. There are nearly no wrecks, because metal is valuable and salvaged as soon as possible.

The best time for diving in Nha Trang is between February and October with air temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees, and water temperature between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. Equipment can be rented from several places.

There are people offering day trips by boat, usually at very good value for money. Starting in the morning you are taken to places where you can swim and snorkel, often followed by a delicious local lunch such as crabs, shrimps, several kinds of fish, vegetables, noodles, everything fresh and delicious. It may be a good idea to bring your own snorkelling equipment because quite often there are not enough sets to go round or you might find them too used.
